Upcoming Forum on Immigration Will Give Update on Executive Action
Jackson, WY - Local non-profit Latino Resource Center (LRC) invites you to the upcoming forum on immigration. The forum, which will be conducted in Spanish, will take place next Wednesday, April 14th at St John’s Episcopal Church with presentations by immigration attorneys Rosie Read and Joel Anderson. The lawyers will discuss what impact the Federal judge in Texas’ ruling has had on President Obama’s executive order and how it might play out in the future. They will answer questions, give updated legal information, and explain the next steps and options immigrants can take.
Obama’s executive action would have allowed roughly 4 million people to step out of the shadows and participate in the community without fear. By enrolling in DACA and DAPA, an estimated 5 million people would have the chance to pursue better jobs, obtain a drivers license, car insurance, health insurance, and more.
As part of educating the community about immigration, the Latino Resource Center is hosting a series of forums and workshops throughout the year. On June 24th-5th, they will host the Mexican Consulate to give immigrants a chance at receiving a valid Mexican passport or identification card. Proof of identification is essential to access basic services in the local community and allows them to continue the immigration process.
“While there are no official statistics, we estimate that over 50% of the Latino population in Jackson is undocumented. The vast majority have been living and working in Jackson for close to 10 years,” says Sonia Capece, director of the Latino Resource Center. “Obviously, many people were very excited about the prospect of obtaining protection from deportation. Obama’s promise of deferred action did not offer a path to citizenship, but it was a step in the right direction… It offered a path to a normal life, a life where they can be more active in the community.”
The forum will take place next Tuesday, April 14th at 5pm at Hansen Hall of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. RSVP if you are planning on attending.
