Through its Successful Latino Entrepreneur Program, LRC organized a 10-week workshop for Latinos in the community who were interested in starting their own business.
Bill Maltby, a financial consultant and former President of Highland Strategies LTD, wanted to give the students a perspective on what goes into building a successful business. He said, “In all my years of small business consulting, I’ve never seen such a highly motivated, creative group of people. I think the Jackson community can look forward to some interesting new businesses coming out of this class.” Their ideas ranged from opening a massage therapy practice, to renting construction equipment, to creating a homemade pasta product. One of the participants commented that “creating my network is one of the most important things. Now I have all the tools and knowledge I need as well as a solid support group.”
Of all the businesses established in Jackson, only a small handful are run by Latinos. The Latino Resource Center is proud to provide support for these hopeful business leaders. LRC Board member Daniela Botur commented that “this program fills a gap in our community. We are cultivating experiences for Latinos to go beyond the status quo and become leaders and models for the next generation. It’s important for this community to foster social mobility and support greater diversity.” LRC plans to continue this program and organize workshops and courses throughout the year.
The graduation ceremony will take place next Friday, March 27th at 6pm at Hansen Hall of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. There will be light snacks and beverages and each graduate will be presented with a certificate of completion.
