LRC Opens Paths for Latina Single Mothers

Jackson, WY – Local non-profit Latino Resource Center (“LRC”) announces today that it will pilot a child-care program for single moms who want to take English language courses at Central Wyoming College.

The fifteen week program is expected to support ten latino families, with children between the ages of four and eight. It will be led three times a week by local immigrant Latina licensed therapist Daniela Peterson while the mothers are taking classes.

LRC Board member Daniela Botur believes that “by helping these families we will be able to affect so many aspects of their lives and by taking action we can create ripples throughout the social demands of our community.”

Many single mothers can’t afford private childcare, and as a result find it difficult to pursue their education. After a group of Latina single mothers approached LRC with their dilemma, the organization decided to fund a new social emotional development program for their children of these mothers called “Abriendo Caminos Para Mamas Solteras (Opening Paths for Single Mothers)”.

“By uniting the education needs of both Latino mothers and their young children, there is an opportunity to impact educational outcomes for both generations,” Daniela states.

The program will also have monthly workshops for the mothers on how to extend the curriculum into their homes. It will begin this week at Intención Studio on West Broadway.
